Imphal, Apr 3 : Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt Ltd (SHRI), operating under an exclusive agreement with the Government of Tripura, has successfully facilitated the first-ever back-to-back kidney transplants in Agartala.
The procedures, conducted on March 30 and 31, 2026, at AGMC & GB Pant Hospital, bring the total number of transplants under this programme in Tripura to seven.
As per a release issued by SHRI, the successful operations were a coordinated effort between the Shija transplant team and the local team at AGMC & GB Pant Hospital.
The collaboration, supported by continued clinical guidance and expertise, is steadily strengthening local transplant capabilities.
Dr Somorendro Paonam, Consultant Urologist at Shija Hospitals, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to assisting the Agartala team in achieving operational independence.
He also highlighted the importance of developing cadaveric transplant protocols to address the increasing need for organ donation.
Since launching its transplant initiative in 2016, Shija Hospitals has achieved several key milestones in North East India, including the region’s first ABO-incompatible transplant in 2021 and the first deceased donor transplant in 2023.
The hospital has now completed 130 kidney transplants, including 5 from deceased donors, and remains a significant player in advancing regional transplant services.
