IMPHAL, Apr 5: Joining the clarion call for deferring census operations until all the illegal immigrants residing in Manipur are identified, the All Manipur Nupi Marup has warned of strong mass agitation if the authorities carry out census operations forcibly.
Decrying the Government’s adamant posture to carry out the census operations as per schedule without paying any heed to the collective voice of the people, the All Manipur Nupi Marup, Khurai staged a protest demonstration at Khurai Sajor Leikai today.
All Manipur Nupi Marup State general secretary Sh Purnimasi said, “Coinciding with the 17th conference of the All Manipur Nupi Marup, Khurai area, we are protesting the Government’s indifference to the popular demand for deferring the census operations”.
She said that it will be quite wrong to go ahead with the census operations without first identifying and deporting all the illegal immigrants residing in Manipur.
She said that Manipur witnessed widespread violence and prolonged unrest on account of infiltration of a large number of Kuki narco-terrorists from across the international border.
Asserting that the Government of India is fully aware of this fact, Purnimasi asked whether New Delhi has any intention to grant Indian citizenship to the illegal immigrants by including them in the census operations.
She went on to ask whether the census operations is a surreptitious ploy to grant undue privileges to the illegal immigrants and annihilate the indigenous people.
Purnimasi asserted that the census operations must be carried out only after all the IDPs are resettled at their original places.
There will be strong mass agitation in case the Government chooses to go ahead with the census operations as per schedule forcibly, she warned.
Purnimasi said that the All Manipur Nupi Marup has already launched a campaign for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with respect to Manipur.
The protesters shouted slogans like, “Census must be preceded by identification and deportation of illegal immigrants”, “Govt must enforce law and order effectively”, “Protect Manipur”, “Convene special Assembly session and adopt a resolution to identify illegal immigrants”, “Long live, Manipur” etc.
Meanwhile, the Uripok Apunba Lup and the Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup held a joint meeting today at Uripok Yambem Leikai and adopted a resolution against carrying out census operations before updating the NRC with respect to Manipur.
The meeting further resolved to oppose vehemently any attempt to carry out census operations forcibly, and also to extend unstinted support to any movement launched by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation, said a press release issued by Uripok Apunba Lup publicity secretary Chingthang Nambam.
