IMPHAL, Apr 5 : Students of Manipur University and various organisations have condemned yesterday's bomb attack on the university campus.
Denouncing the attack, Manipur University (MU), Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Union of Kangleipak (SUK), and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpang Lup (AIMS) stated that the attack targeted the core value of education.
Students of MU's Law Department also staged a sit in protest at the varsity today.
The protesters held placards with inscriptions such as "Give us Education Freedom", "Save University from Bomb and Gun Culture", "We Want Peace, no Terrorism on Manipur University Campus" etc.
They appealed to groups or individuals concerned to clarify the motive behind the attack.
MU, in a statement, said that the bomb went off near the gate of Type 5, Block 8 of the University last night around 7.15 pm.
Saying that the heinous act was an attack on innocent lives and the core values of education, peace and harmony, it appealed to the public to cooperate in preserving the sanctity of the University.
The safety and well being of students, faculty and staff remain the University's highest priority, the MU said, further appealing to one and all to support the ongoing efforts to uphold peace, ensure security and protect educational spaces as safe havens for learning and development.
AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, and AIMS, in a joint statement, expressed that they consider the attack on the University a dishonourable act that should never have occurred.
Saying that the attack has not only created a climate of panic within the University but also disrupted the academic environment, the student organisations appealed to all concerned not to repeat such acts in the future.
MUSU also condemned the incident in the strongest terms.
The Union also stated that the attack has severely disrupted the academic atmosphere, and appealed to all to refrain from such actions in the future.
