All India Inter University Thang-Ta (M&W) Competition begins at Manipur University

IMPHAL, Apr 6 : All India Inter University Thang-Ta (M&W) Competition hosted by the Manipur University kicked off today at Dr Kamal Indoor Stadium with a glittering opening ceremony.
Thokchom Satyabrata, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly; Professor N Lokendra, VC, Manipur University; Prof M Premjit, Registrar MU; Dr Surjeet Singh, Director, Physical Education, University of Kashmir and Observer, AIU; N Kunjarani, Comdt CRPF GC Imphal and 2004 Athens Olympian; H Premkumar, president Thang-Ta Federation of India attended the event as presidium members among others.
As many as 150 athletes representing 30 universities from across the country are taking part in the tournament that will run till April 9.
Speaking at the occasion, lauded the organising committee for executing such a magnanimous event.
He also highlighted the historical and cultural pride that Thang-Ta carries. Urging all students to showcase their talent in the competition, he also extended best wishes to them.
MU VC Prof N Lokendra also briefly walked through Manipuri history and the significance of indigenous martial art form in it.
The first day of the competition witness N Lanchenba Singh of Manipur University securing men’s Phunaba Ahanba event gold for -46 kg category as Krishan Kant Suthar of Bhagwant University, Rajasthan and E Balachandar of Tamil Nadu Phy & Sports University made 2-3 podium finishes.
Dhanamanjuri University’s Thoiba Nongthombam meanwhile claimed -50 kg category gold medal getting better of Govind of Bhagwant University while Prem Nath of GNA University, Punjab settled for the bronze medal.
The - 54 kg category gold medal went to Magson Angom of  Dhanamanjuri University who upstaged M Yabesh of Tamil Nadu Phy & Sports University in the final as Y Rojit Singh of Manipur University and LH Centring of Manipur University of Culture picked the bronze medals.
Women’s Phunaba Anishuba event gold medal for - 44 kg category was claimed by Likla Chanu Moirangthem of Manipur University of Culture as Dharshini V of University of Madras, Chennai won the silver and K Mullai Roja of Tamil Nadu Phy & Sports University and Sh Bidyaluxmi Devi of Manipur University shared the bronze medals.
Manorama Yumnam of National Sports University meanwhile claimed women’s Phunaba Anishuba gold medal for - 48 kg category beating S Chaoba Devi of Manipur University while Mamta of MBS Punjab Sports University and M Mahalakshme of Tamil Nadu Phy & Sports University shared the bronze medal podium.
K Thaja Chanu of Manipur University of Culture meanwhile fetched the - 52 kg category gold medal in the Phunaba Anishuba event beating L Silvia Chanu of Manipur University as Rakshita Rajawat of Apex University, Rajasthan and Puja of University of Patanjali, Uttarakhand settled for the bronze medals.
