IMPHAL, Apr 6 : As part of its 46th Realization Month, the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) successfully organised a State Level Debating Competition today at the Maharaja Bodhchandra College, Palace Compound.
The motion for the debate was, “Only updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) can save the indigenous people of Manipur from foreign nationals”.
Around 50 participants took part in the competition.
Speaking on the occasion, AMSU president Lukram Malangba said that the competition was organised to highlight the necessity of updating the NRC for all indigenous residents of Manipur.
The debate also aimed to urge the State Government to initiate the process as a primary step toward identifying and expelling foreign nationals, he added.
Malangba noted that AMSU has been demanding an NRC update and action against illegal immigrants for over 50 years.
He expressed disappointment that the Government has yet to take any concrete action, calling the delay unfortunate.
Malangba also questioned if the steady influx of migrants is a calculated move by the Central Government, wondering why the authorities aren’t acting when small communities in the Northeast are impacted, unlike the swift response expected if similar issues arose in mainland India.
The event was attended by Dr Yumnam Premananda, Head, Department of Law and Director, Centre for Human Rights, Manipur University; and Dr B Sharatchandra, Head, Department of Political Science, Ideal Girls College, Akampat, as the chief guest and special guest respectively.
Winners of the competition in the order of merit are- Huidrom Santirani Devi of Amutombi Divine Life English School, Wabagai; Thoithoibi Maibam of Amutombi Divine Life English School, Wabagai; and Devirani Keithellakpam of Unacco School, Meitram.
