Murder accused remanded to police custody

IMPHAL, Apr 6 : The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East today remanded the 28-year-old rape and murder accused in police custody.
Accused Laishram Lanngamba (28) s/o Bira of Moreh Ward Number 9, presently staying at Akampat relief camp was produced before the Court under a very tight security arrangement by a team of Imphal East District Police with a prayer for remanding him in police custody for five days.  
An APP of the State submitted that the present case has been registered against the accused under section 103 (murder), 238 BNS (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information) and different sections of Prevention of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act in connection with a heinous offence of sexual assault and murder of a minor girl aged about just 7 years. The accused was arrested in connection with the case last night itself and produced before the Court today.
The APP submitted that the present case involved grave and serious offences, including aggravated penetrative sexual assault and murder, attracting stringent provisions under different sections of BNS.
The investigation of the case is at a crucial stage and the custodial interrogation of the accused is highly essential to ascertain the complete sequence of events leading to the commission of the offence, to recover material evidence, including clothes worn at the time of the offence, weapons and other incriminating articles, and ascertain any possible involvement of other persons in the offence the APP said.

It was also submitted that the alleged accused was not cooperating with the investigation and there are reasonable grounds to believe that he may tamper with evidence or influence witnesses, if not kept in custody.
The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP and on the perusal of the case record, remanded the accused in police custody till April 10.
