KANGPOKPI, Apr 6: The Kuki CSO Working Committee has issued a strong statement alleging escalating attacks on Kuki villages and demanding immediate intervention from authorities, citing a deteriorating law-and-order situation in Ukhrul district.
The committee alleged that Kuki communities have cooperated with Government agencies “from day one,” in efforts including dismantling of bunkers to prevent escalation. It claimed "any retaliatory firing from Kuki villagers has been strictly in self-defence."
On the other hand, the Thawai Tangkhul village has allegedly openly opposed the entry and functioning of security forces in its area, it claimed.
It alleged that the Thawai Kuki and Shangkai villages have been under attack since 6 pm on April 5, and Mongkot Chepu has faced assault from 8.30 am on April 6.
The committee also alleged that Kuki civilians have also come under fire along the Leplen-Tingpibung route.
Additionally, it accused personnel of Litan police of firing "rocket launchers" around 1.30 pm on April 6 and triggering a jungle fire in Mongkot Chepu. It alleged attacks are allegedly being carried out by armed persons operating from Thawai Tangkhul, Sinakeithei and Sikibung villages.
Expressing concern, the committee alleged that the security forces on the ground remain ineffective due to lack of clear authority. “The situation is critical. Decisive action cannot be delayed,” said the committee urging the authorities concerned to empower security forces with clear operational authority, ensure protection of civilians and safe movement, and conduct impartial investigations into all reported incidents.
