MOIRANG, Apr 7: Two civilians were killed when CRPF jawans fired live bullets toward a group of civilians who were protesting against the killing of an infant boy and a baby girl in a terror attack carried out by Kuki militants at Tronglaobi in the presence of a large number of security forces including CRPF in the area.
Incensed and deeply hurt by the terror attack which killed two innocent children apart from inflicting critical injuries to their mother, a large number of civilians gathered at around 12.30 pm and staged a protest in front of the CRPF camps located at Gelmol village and Okshongbung Khunou.
Contending that the personnel of CRPF D8 company stationed at Gelmol and Okshongbung Khunou villages to the western side of Tronglaobi have failed miserably to protect civilians from terrorists/militants, the protesters demanded the CRPF personnel to leave the area.
The CRPF personnel responded by firing live bullets indiscriminately at the protesting crowd, killing two civilians.
The two civilians who were killed in the indiscriminate firing by CRPF have been identified as Huidrom Henry (40) and Laishram Jiten (60).
Laishram Jiten was a displaced person from Torbung who was staying at Moirang College relief camp.
Huidrom Henry hailed from Tera Lukram Leirak but he was staying in rented rooms at Phougakchao Ikhai Awang Leikai since four years back. He is survived by two sons, two daughters and a wife.
Scores of other protesters sustained injuries as they were beaten up by Central forces. Many others also sustained injuries in the ensuing stampede.
The protesters who sustained minor injuries were treated at Moirang CHC while those who suffered critical injuries were taken to Imphal. Sources said that around 25 injured protesters were brought to Moirang CHC.
RAF personnel sent from Imphal to control the public protest were blocked by a large group of people at Tronglaobi Keithel.
