IMPHAL, Apr 8 : Accusing the Government of failing to rein in Kuki terrorists, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur (COCOMI) has urged Chief Minister Y Khemchand and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam to resign on moral grounds.
Condemning the late-night bomb attack at Tronglaobi, Bishnupur, which led to the tragic death of a toddler and a 5-year-old boy, and grievously injured their mother while they were sleeping, COCOMI volunteers attempted to march towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow today.
The volunteers gathered at WAL Club, Wangkhei, and began marching towards the CM’s residence, raising slogans.
However, they were blocked by a large contingent of security forces at Wangkhei Angom Leikai, leading to a brief standoff.
As the volunteers attempted to break through the security barricade, the security personnel fired tear gas shells and dispersed the protesters.
Speaking to the media, COCOMI convenor YK Dhiren stated that the Chief Minister and the Home Minister must take responsibility for the horrific killing of the sleeping children, as well as for the deaths of three individuals who were killed while protesting against the act of terrorism.
They must resign on moral grounds, he said.
Announcing that COCOMI will observe a day of mourning tomorrow, he appealed to the people to light a candle at their respective residential gates in the evening.
He also urged the public to boycott all Government institutions and continue democratic protests until appropriate action is taken against the terrorists.
Meanwhile, protesters at Khurai Lamlong burnt tyres and other objects along the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
The protesters dispersed after security forces intervened and fired tear gas shells.
It is reported that one protester has been arrested by the police.
The details of the individual, however, were not available at the time this report was filed.
