IMPHAL, May 17: The tension that has gripped Manipur since the past few weeks could spiral into a broader and larger conflict if the Government fails to secure the safe release of six Naga men taken hostage, said Shiv Sena Manipur president Moirangthem Tombi today.
The recent killings of innocent civilians including Church leaders and the incident of hostage taking are deeply disturbing and highly condemnable. The Centre and the State Government must take immediate steps to secure the safe release of the 6 Naga men taken hostage within 24 hours, he said.
Tombi made these statements during a function organised to welcome new members who have joined Shiv Sena. The function was held at the party's office at Babupara.
Speaking at the function, Tombi hinted that the situation in Manipur is deteriorating with Kuki militants now targeting the Nagas.
While many civilians have lost their lives to militant attacks amid the conflict since May 3, 2023, more than 30 persons are still missing, he said.
The priority of the Government at present must be to ensure the safety of the six Naga men taken hostage and secure their release at the earliest, Tombi said.
In case anything bad happens to them, the Centre and the State Government must bear the responsibility, he added.
Commenting on the May 7 Kuki militants' attack on Kamjong villages, Tombi said the Government denial to acknowledge the incident as an act of external aggression is unfortunate.
The attack on Namli, Wangli and Choro villages by Myanmar based Kuki militants was a  serious escalation in the violence and a clear act of external aggression, he added.
Tombi further commented about the total shutdown that has been imposed by Kuki Inpi Manipur on highways, and said that the Government must take immediate measures to open the vital roadways.
The Government should deploy security forces to secure the highways and allow free and secure passage of all vehicles, he said.
During the function, Tombi greeted and welcomed social worker Angom Tiken of Mayang Imphal Constituency, Md Yaima, Nalini and Angom Amutombi as new members of the Shiv Sena.
Moirangthem Tombi also announced the appointment of social worker Angom Tiken as the party's general secretary.
