IMPHAL, May 18: Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) observed the 21st Meetei Mayek Implementation Day at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today.
The Meetei Mayek Implementation Day marks the historic signing of a Memorandum of Understanding which replaced Bengali script with Meetei Mayek in school education.
GP Women College Associate Professor Dr Wai- khom Romesh, MEELAL president in-charge Langol-jam Nongmailembi Leima, COCOMI convenor YK Dhiren, COCOMI co-convenor Yumkhaibam Surjit- kumar Khuman, WASDEV president RK Tharaksana, Pandam Chief Editor Meisnam Shivadutta Lu-wang, All Manipur Students Guardian Organisation secretary Sougrakpam Sumati and members of several organisations attended the observance.
During the observance, MEELAL secretary general Paonam Thakaba Meetei said the lup (MEELAL) was established on August 18, 2003 and is a conglomerate of 36 organisations dedicated to promoting Meetei Mayek.
Late MEELAL leader Chingsubam Akaba led several public movements to revive Meetei Mayek and include it as a subject in school and higher education. Many MEELAL and DESAM members were put in jail under the National Security Act (NSA), Thakaba said.
In a significant milestone, a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between MEELAL and the Government on May 18, 2005 to replace Bengali script with Meetei Mayek. Subsequently, the script was introduced in school education starting from Class I, Thakaba said.
Now, the Meetei Mayek script is taught as a compulsory subject/medium for Manipuri students. The script has been introduced up to the undergraduate and university levels.
Thakaba said talks with Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) for translation of all subjects except Language text books to Meetei is underway.
Further, a target has been set to complete translation of all textbooks of higher secondary education under COHSEM to Meetei Mayek this year. Also, steps are being taken up to introduce Meetei Mayek as a medium for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), Thakaba said.
