IMPHAL, May 22 : The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) has stated that it would now take strong and uncompromising measures to safeguard the interest and integrity of Manipur.
Today, a sit-in protest was organised at Takyel Khongban Maning Leikai against the killing of five people including a 5 month old girl and her five year old brother at Tronglaobi on April 7.
The protest demonstration was organised by Pungsumbam Leikai Women Welfare Association (PLWWA) under the aegis of All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLAMPAM), All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) and Committee on Human Rights (CoHR).
Placards with messages such as "Protect civilians", "Penalise the killers", "Abrogate SoO", "We condemn the Central Government" "We must protect our land ourselves" etc were used during the protest.
Speaking to the media, AMUCO president Sanjoy Sorokhaibam said that the people of Manipur have been enduring the alleged oppression of the Central Government, but it has now become unbearable.
He said they would act like a flesh-eating lion, if necessary, to protect Manipur.
Sanjoy also claimed that security forces have been conducting search operations and seizing weapons in the valley districts, but the law has failed to function effectively in the hill districts.
Claiming that the crisis in Manipur persists because of the Government's insincerity, he urged the Centre to stop using Kuki militants to target indigenous people and immediately end its proxy war.
He also accused the State Government of turning a blind eye to the 'genocidal campaign' being carried out against indigenous communities.
Regarding the hostage crisis, he said the Government must take full responsibility for any eventuality if it fails to secure the release of civilians held illegally at the earliest.
Meanwhile, PLWWA general secretary Naorem Thoithoiba Leima expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the Tronglaobi case, which involved a bomb attack that killed two young siblings, as well as indiscriminate firing by the CRPF that claimed three more lives.
She said that Central security forces must be withdrawn from Manipur if they are not able to protect the lives and properties of people.
