IMPHAL, May 22 : The International Biodiversity Day 2026 was observed in Manipur on Friday under the global theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact”.
An awareness programme was jointly organised by EIACP Hub Manipur, Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, and Modern College’s Environmental Club, NSS Units I & II, and IQAC at Modern College, Porompat.
Speaking at the event, EIACP Hub Coordinator Dr Mohd Habibullah Khan said 60 to 70 percent of global species face threats from human activity.
He noted that Manipur’s State Fish Pengba is near extinction, while rivers like Nambul and Imphal are drying up and wetlands including Loktak Lake are degraded.
He also flagged pollution, citing recovery of over 40 truckloads of plastic bottles from Ithai Barrage, and linked environmental decline to the spread of dengue.
IQAC Coordinator N Bubhon Singh and Principal Prof N Romabati Devi both stressed that biodiversity loss is now one of Manipur’s most pressing issues, urging grassroots action.
The programme concluded with a call to protect the State’s rivers, wetlands, forests, and native species.
