IMPHAL, May 22 : With the ongoing highway blockade seriously affecting the movement of transporters, the Manipur Consortium of Potato and Onion Freights and Traders (MACPOFT) has claimed that the inaction of the CAF&PD Department to regulate prices of essential items has caused further distress to traders and consumers.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club today, MACPOFT secretary Shanta Nahakpam stated that the State requires seven to eight truckloads of potatoes and onions daily.
However, due to the highway shutdown imposed by certain Kuki groups, only one or two truckloads of these items are reaching Imphal, resulting in a shortage of potatoes and onions in the State, he said.
Claiming that wholesalers are hoarding these food items to drive up prices, he added that the CAF&PD’s failure to prevent the price hike is evident.
He urged the Government to conduct raids on godowns to prevent hoarding of essential goods.
Shanta said that they have been urging the State Government to make special arrangements to ensure the smooth movement of goods vehicles.
However, he added, there appears to be a lack of serious intervention from the Government.
Noting that several goods vehicles are currently stranded at multiple locations, including Jiribam, he urged the Government to take special measures to prevent disruption in transportation if they cannot open the highway. The stranded drivers are facing serious challenges, including a shortage of food, he said and added that the Government should address their plight.
