IMPHAL, May 22: With the term of incumbent Rajya Sabha Member Leishemba Sanajaoba expiring on June 21 this year, many political observers have started exploring names who may become the next Rajya Sabha member and the list includes ex-Chief Minister N Biren and BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi.
BJP sources said that BJP MLAs and office bearers have already started talking, though informally, on who should be nominated as the next Rajya Sabha member.
Notably, Leishemba Sanajaoba was elected to the lone Rajya Sabha seat of Manipur in the election held on June 22, 2020.
Majority of the BJP MLAs and office bearers are not in favour of re-electing Leishemba Sanajaoba, though there are some other BJP leaders who are in favour of re-electing Lei- shemba Sanajaoba.
Even though ex-CM N Biren has not expressed any desire to go to the Rajya Sabha, some BJP MLAs and office bearers have reportedly expressed their desire to BJP Central leaders to elect N Biren to the Rajya Sabha and allot him a Ministerial portfolio.
At the same time, BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi has expressed her desire to BJP Central leaders to go to the Rajya Sabha.
Some BJP leaders have been lobbying with BJP Central leaders to nominate Sharda as the party’s candidate for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat and  demonstrate the party’s commitment to women empowerment, said the sources.
Former Rajya Sabha MP Kshetrimayum Bhabananda who also served as BJP Manipur Pradesh president is also seeking re-election to the Rajya Sabha, according to the sources.
On the other hand, some other leaders of BJP Manipur Pradesh have been proposing the names of retired Lt Col Konsam Himalay and Shamu-railat-pam Premananda for the State’s lone Rajya Sabha seat.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India today announced the election schedule for election to 24 Rajya Sabha seats including Manipur.
As per the schedule, election notification will be issued on June 1 and voting will be held on June 18.
Counting of votes will be done on the same day.
Even though many names are doing the rounds for nomination as BJP candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat, the final decision will be taken by BJP Central leadership. As such, the BJP candidate is not known yet.
Notably, it is the legislators who vote in the election  of Rajya Sabha Members.
Manipur, at present, has 51 ruling MLAs and 7 Opposition MLAs including five Congress legislators and two MLAs of Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA).
Sources said that the Congress is working to field its candidate for the election to the Rajya Sabha seat scheduled for June 18.
Sources further said that a new president of BJP Manipur Pradesh may be elected before the election to the Rajya Sabha.
