KANGPOKPI, May 23: The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) has yet again extended the ongoing total shutdown across "Kuki-Zo areas" for another 48 hours beginning midnight of May 23.
KIM said the shutdown has been extended “in the larger interest of safeguarding the rights, dignity, and future of the Kuki-Zo community.” The organisation declared that all educational institutions, business establishments and vehicular movements would remain suspended during the shutdown period, effectively bringing daily life across large parts of the "Kuki-Zo inhabited areas" to a standstill.
However, KIM clarified that essential and humanitarian services, including medical emergencies, pharmacies, media personnel, water supply and electricity-related services, would remain exempted from the purview of the shutdown.
The fresh extension comes at a time when tensions remain extremely volatile in the region following recent killings and abductions of civilians in Kangpokpi. KIM further urged the authorities concerned and the Centre to take “immediate and sincere measures” to restore peace, ensure justice and end the immense suffering faced by the people.
