IMPHAL, May 24 : Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh stated that Manipur is suffering today “because of past mistakes.”
Addressing a function held at Laipham Khunou, Biren, MLA of Heingang AC, said he had worked to the best of his ability to address the issue of illegal immigration during his tenure as Chief Minister.
Saying that there, however, was a lack of unity in the effort, he added that the future of Manipur could have been secured had people not been driven by emotion at that time.
In Assam and West Bengal, illegal immigrants have themselves left the States after the BJP won the elections, he claimed, adding that every issue has to be resolved politically.
He also said that things need to be viewed with a broader perspective in politics, stating that self-centered politics will lead to the suffering of the next generation.
Saying that frequent flooding and warming in Manipur are linked to poppy plantations, he added that he worked to prevent poppy cultivation when he was the Chief Minister.
Biren continued that the Chief Ministers of Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura have been called by the Union Home Minister for discussions on illegal immigration.
He said that Manipur, being a State facing the issue of illegal immigration, should also be part of the discussion.
