IMPHAL, May 24: The Gorkha Youths of India (GYI) has appealed for peace, restraint and protection of innocent civilians amid the prevailing tension in Kanglatongbi, while expressing concern over reports of alleged harassment and assault on members of the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community.
In a press release, GYI president Prithibiraj Pun stated that Kanglatongbi has long been a shared space of coexistence among the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community and various other communities of Manipur, where people have lived together through mutual understanding, respect and cooperation even during difficult times.
The organisation expressed sympathy towards the Liangmei Naga community over the continued detention of six allegedly abducted individuals and acknowledged the emotional pain and suffering being faced by the community.
At the same time, the organisation cautioned that grief, anger and frustration should not lead to the targeting or harassment of innocent civilians. It expressed concern over reports of aggressive vehicle checking, intimidation and the alleged assault of three innocent boys on May 22, stating that such incidents require immediate attention.
The statement maintained that the Nepali-speaking Gorkha community of Kanglatongbi has not taken sides in the ongoing tensions and added that neutrality should not be misconstrued as weakness.
Emphasising that peace, restraint and mutual respect remain the only sustainable path forward, the organisation urged all communities not to allow anger, suspicion and present tensions to damage the long-standing social harmony of the area.
Appealing to responsible organisations, community leaders, youth groups and authorities, GYI urged that innocent civilians should not be harassed, intimidated or targeted in the name of anger or suspicion.
Meanwhile, GYI general secretary Sher Singh Sonar appealed to the concerned authorities, particularly the Officer-in-Charge of Sekmai Police Station, to immediately look into the matter to prevent recurrence of such incidents and misunderstandings in the future.
