New police vehicles to be used in CI Ops : Home Minister

IMPHAL, May 25 : Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam has said that the police vehicles flagged off today will be used in counter-insurgency operations and to crack down on armed groups targeting civilians.
Speaking at an event held at the parade ground of 1st Manipur Rifles to hand over 477 newly procured police vehicles today, he said that most of the vehicles currently used in the hill districts are old, posing serious challenges for personnel in carrying out their duties.
Responding to a media query on the hostage crisis involving members of the Naga and Kuki communities, Govindas said that the Government has been holding talks with civil society organisations of both communities to secure the release of the hostages.
He also said that search operations are still underway in the hill districts.
When asked whether the Police Department is facing a manpower shortage, the Minister said that around 7,000 posts are currently vacant, adding that the recruitment process to fill the positions, however, is under process.
Govindas, meanwhile, stated that the Government of India has been taking measures to modernise the police force to protect the lives and property of people in States frequently affected by crises, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
With the arrival of the new vehicles, the State police will now be able to respond more swiftly to crisis situations, he said, while thanking the Central leadership for its support.
He further stated that the Government is  working to equip the police force with more sophisticated weapons and also strengthen the investigation of cyber crimes.
Saying that police-public relations would improve considerably if the police work sincerely to maintain law and order, the Home Minister appealed to the force to strengthen its intelligence network so that potential threats can be identified in advance.
Further stating that the Manipur Police has been undertaking various initiatives to improve police-public relations, Govindas appealed to the public to cooperate with the police.
The public is also a part of the Government, he added.
