IMPHAL, May 25 : With Manipur reeling from one crisis after another over the past few years, the Congress party has accused the BJP Government of being reactive and taking precautionary measures only after damage has been done.
Addressing a press briefing at Congress Bhavan today, Loitongbam Tilotama, vice-president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), said that the Government has failed to resolve the protracted crisis affecting Manipur.
Manipur remains in a constant state of unrest as incidents of killings and abductions continue, she said and questioned to whom the people should appeal for the restoration of peace.
Amid the crisis plaguing Manipur since May 3, 2023, the conflict between the Naga and Kuki communities has intensified in recent weeks, with around 20 civilians from both sides taken hostage, she said.
She appealed to both communities to release the hostages on humanitarian grounds and urged the Government to ensure the safe release of the hostages.
The Government has been remaining silent on the hostage crisis, she said, questioning whether handing over cases to the NIA and providing compensation after deaths in unfortunate incidents is the BJP Government’s solution for all issues.
Tilotama said there is no longer any reason for the people to have faith in the BJP Governments at the Centre and the State, as they have failed to protect lives.
Will only the dead bear the loss under the BJP Government? she asked.
Stop taking precautionary measures only after damage has already been done and to stop chasing criminals in the wrong direction, she said, calling for sincere efforts from the Government to resolve the crisis.
She asked if the Government has any plan or a roadmap to restore normalcy in the State.
Stating that the plight of the people remains unaddressed, she described the BJP Government as both deaf and blind to public grievances.
She said that the double-engine BJP Government must take full responsibility for all unfortunate incidents taking place in Manipur.
The Congress leader appealed to the Government to assert its authority and work towards a lasting resolution to the crisis without compromising the territorial integrity of Manipur.
