Vehicle lifter remanded

IMPHAL, May 25 : The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, has remanded a 38-year-old non-local vehicle lifter from Cachar, Asasm to police custody.
The accused, identified as Ala Uddin, son of Jamal Uddin of  Lalpani in Cachar district, Assam, and currently residing at Lilong Lairakhong, was produced before the Court by a team of City Police Station along with a prayer for police custody remand.
The Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) submitted that a complaint was lodged by Laishram Premkumar, owner of a two-wheeler moped, stating that on May 8 his vehicle was stolen by an unknown person while parked at Kakhulong Road near Kakhulong Youth Congress, Paona Keithel.
During investigation, police received information from sources that the accused was seen loitering in the North AOC area, following which a team from City Police Station apprehended him.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to stealing the moped from the Kakhulong area and selling it to an unknown person at Lilong Bazaar for Rs 30,000, which he reportedly used to buy drugs.
He further admitted to stealing another moped on April 22 from Jalal Crossing, Thangal Keithel.
Police stated that the accused is involved in another case registered at Porompat Police Station and is suspected to be a habitual vehicle lifter involved in multiple theft cases, with drug addiction cited as a possible motive.
The accused has allegedly not disclosed the names of his associates or the buyers, and no stolen vehicle has been recovered so far. The APP sought three days of police custody for further investigation. After hearing the submissions and perusing the case records, the Court granted three days of police custody remand till May 27 for further investigation.
