Homage paid to Kajao

MOIRANG, May 25 : The 135th death anniversary of Pukhramba Kajao, who speared then British political agent Grimwood to death, was observed today at his memorial compound at Kangmong Maisnam Leikai.
He was hung to death for the fatal assault.
Organised by  Pukhramba Kajao Memorial Trust Manipur in association with Justice Committee on Anglo Manipuri War 1891, Martyrs and Freedom Figh-ter of Kangleipak (Mani- pur), the programme was attended by Konthoujam AC MLA Dr Sapam Ranjan, UNLF former chairman Ningthemcha Sanayaima alias Meghen, Justice Committee on Anglo Manipuri war 189, Martyrs and Freedom Fighter of Kangleipak (Manipur) chairman Joy-chandra Konthoujam, Pu- khramba Kajao Memorial Trust Manipur president Ngangom Tomal and founder (former) president of the Trust Heramani Khuman as presidium members.
Addressing the function, MLA Ranjan said that Kajao was a brave warrior who played a significant historical role in the Anglo-Manipur War.
He added that organizing such events would help the younger generation understand the role played by "our forefathers" in history.
Joychandra stated that “our ancestors” fought against British imperialism despite Kangleipak being a small kingdom and it speaks volumes about their courage and resilience. Saying that many brave warriors like Kajao attained martyrdom in the war, he added that every Manipuri need to work together like their forefathers, who did not wish to come under anyone’s control.
Regarding the crisis in Manipur, he stated that the Prime Minister speaks about world peace during foreign tours but has ignored the suffering of the people of Manipur. Manipur is an Indian State, he said and added that the Government of India has, however, allowed the crisis in the State to persist. He appealed to all Manipuris to forgive and forget one another for past actions for the sake of future generations.
