IMPHAL, May 27: The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) conducted a surprise inspection visit at DM College of Teacher Education today and expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of the institute and the continued neglect faced by the higher education sector in Manipur.
Speaking to the media, DESAM president Oinam Romesh strongly criticised the State Government and the Higher Education Department for their prolonged failure to address the long-standing crisis faced by the institute.
During the inspection, DESAM found that against the sanctioned strength of 30 teachers, only 17 teachers are currently serving at the college.
Moreover, some among the available teachers have reportedly been utilised or deputed to other institutes and offices, further aggravating the already critical shortage of faculty members.
The student body questioned how quality teacher education can be expected under such poor and neglected conditions, stating that the present situation reflects the alarming state of the education system in Manipur.
The student body further highlighted that although the college was established in 1972, there has been no regular Principal since 1986.
DESAM also observed that several computers and educational materials at the college had been severely damaged after they were submerged during floods. Despite such major losses, no adequate measures have been taken to restore the infrastructure or improve the academic environment of the institute, Romesh said.
DESAM asserted that the continued failure to appoint adequate teaching staff and the persistent neglect of educational institutes would only lead to further deterioration in the quality of teacher education in Manipur, ultimately affecting the future of students and the development of the State as a whole. The student body demanded the immediate return of all utilised teachers to the college and urged the Govt to recruit the required number of teachers without further delay.
DESAM also called upon the concerned authorities, including the Education Commissioner and the Director of Higher Education, to resign on moral grounds for failing to safeguard and strengthen the education system of the State.
It questioned whether the Government intends to gradually erase education from Manipur through continued negligence and indifference.
DESAM further urged the Govt to sincerely prioritise and protect the education sector, stating that only through genuine reforms, proper care, and commitment towards education can a better, stronger, and progressive Manipur be built.
