IMPHAL, May 27: The Gorkha community of Manipur has historically lived in peaceful coexistence with all communities of the State and has always stood for unity mutual respect and communal harmony, said several Gorkha organisations in a statement appealing to people to maintain restraint, uphold brotherhood and reject hatred, violence, misinformation and divisive propaganda.
The joint statement said all Gorkha civil society organisations (CSOs), Kanglatongbi Gram Panchayat, Kanglatongbi Youth Clubs and social workers held a general meeting yesterday and it expressed deep concern over the prevailing situation affecting peace, harmony. The meeting also observed, with serious concern, the activities of certain bogus Gorkha organisations and antisocial elements attempting to create misunderstanding, spread misinformation and disturb long-standing unity and peaceful coexistence among different communities, said the CSOs.
"We strongly condemn any act by individuals of the Gorkha community, anti-social elements and bogus organisations that threatens the safety, dignity, unity and peaceful existence of innocent civilians," said the CSOs.
Attempts to incite communal disharmony, provoke tension and misuse the name of the Gorkha community for personal vested interest must be firmly rejected by all sections of the society. The Gorkha community remains committed to maintaining neutrality, peace, social stability and cordial relations with all communities in the State, said the CSOs
The Manipur Gorkha Union (MGU), Gorkha Youth of India (GYI) and the All Manipur Gorkha Youth Association (AMGYA) which emerged recently are not recognised by the Gorkha community, said the CSOs.
Only the Manipur Gorkha Welfare Union (MGWU), All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union (AMGSU), Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh Manipur Branch, Nepali Sahitya Parishad Manipur (NSP), Manipureli Kirat Sangh (MKS), All Manipur Gorkha Ex-Serviceman Association (AMGESA) and Nepali Sanskriti Suraksha Parishad Manipur (NSSPM) shall represent the Gorkha community, said the CSOs.
The Gorkha CSOs also appealed to media houses, social media users, and the general public to refrain from spreading unverified information, inflammatory statements or communal narratives that may escalate tension and harm the sentiment of other communities.
