IMPHAL, May 27 : Taking serious note of the shutdown that has suspended vehicular movement on National Highway-202, the Tangkhul Naga Aze Longphang (TNAL) has urged the Government to widen and improve the Lambui-Marou-Tangkhul Hundung-Nongdam road as an alternate lifeline for people for Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) too has urged Chief Minister Y Khemchand to repair the approximately 52-km road stretch from Ramva/Lamvui village to Nongdam village via Tangkhul Hundung village, in view of the approaching monsoon season.
In a statement, the TNL said that the road from Mahadev to Litan along National Highway 202 has become extremely risky for travellers due to the ongoing conflict between Kukis and Nagas, and that the only safe alternative route at present is the one mentioned above.
It also stated that the Ramva/Lamvui–Nongdam road serves as a vital lifeline for the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, urging the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to repair the road.
In a statement, the TNAL said "the National Highway-202 (Imphal to Ukhrul Road) has been under siege by the SoO Kuki militants in the Litan area and the inability of the State Government to provide security has rendered the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong helpless."
As people are unable to travel on the NH-202, the route Lambui-Marou-Tangkhul Hundung- Nong- dam remains the only alternate lifeline of the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong. It also remains the only viable route now for trade and commerce and Government officials, it said.
However, the alternate road is very narrow and unable to accommodate the increased traffic. It has numerous dangerous and hazardous corners without sufficient space for vehicles to make a turn. The pavement too is in a deteriorated condition and the drainage is blocked at many stretches, said the TNAL.
Considering the importance of the alternate route and the difficulties facing the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, the State Government should take up necessary measures at the earliest to widen the road and strengthen it. TNAL will extend full support and cooperation to the State Government on this matter, it said.
