IMPHAL, May 27: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 62nd death anniversary of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru at  Congress Bhawan at BT road, Imphal today.
Congress' MLAs including former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, office bearers and party workers paid floral tributes to the statue of Jawaharlal Nehru.
Speaking on the occasion, senior Congress leader Okram Ibobi accused the BJP-led Government of undermining India's democratic values and the Constitution.
The type of governance under the BJP-led Government is the pole-opposite of what Jawaharlal Nehru dreamt new India would be, he said.
Instead of focusing on delivering services to the people and bringing about development, the BJP is focusing on how it can win elections, Ibobi said.
"What it sees is only elections. While it is focusing on election strategies, India's economy is going backward," Ibobi said.
India was earlier the third largest economy in the world. Now it is in the sixth position and overtaken by Japan, UK and Germany, Ibobi said.
India is weakening under the BJP in every sector, he asserted.
Responding to questions raised by reporters, Ibobi said it is the duty of the Government to ensure safety and security for its people and "it shouldn't run away from its responsibility."
Even weeks after several members of the Naga and Kuki communities were abducted and taken hostage, the Central Government and the State Government have remained mute spectators without taking up any concrete measures to rescue and secure the safe release of the hostages, Ibobi said.
"Is there any hidden agenda for the deafening silence on the hostage crises? Or are they watching the communities kill one another and waiting for them to wear off and cede violence as an irresponsible Government may?" Ibobi asked.
If the conflict had broken out in other States such as Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh or Delhi, would they remain spectators as they have in the case of Manipur ? Ibobi asked.
Ibobi also spoke about Jawaharlal Nehru and  said he was a visionary leader and known as the modern architect of India.
Jawaharlal Nehru was a freedom fighter and took key roles in India's struggle to gain independence from the British. He spent more than 10 years in jail, Ibobi said.
Jawaharlal Nehru wanted a strong secular India, and he worked toward establishing good relationships with other countries. The Congress Government under him established AIMS, IIT, ISRO for India to become self-reliant and strong. India is now able to stand as a developing major power because of these foundations, Ibobi said.
