Fitting tributes paid to martyrs of 1973, 1979 Respect paid to sacrifices of students

BISHNUPUR, May 28: The 37th Students' Emancipation Day, commemorating three student martyrs, was observed at the Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Bishnupur district today.
The three student martyrs, Haobijam Ibohal, Urikhinbam Khelen and Kumam Sarat sacrificed their lives during student movements in 1973 and 1979.
AMSU leaders, students and members of the public paid floral tributes at the memorial of the three martyr students at the school, and later the day was observed at different places.
A later observance at the Moirang Khoiru Leikai Mandap was attended by AMSU president Bruce Pebam, AMSU Bishnupur District Committee president Bishal Konjengbam, Moirang Multipurpose Hr Secondary School Principal Ph Tampakleima, IPOM Bishnupur district president Wahengbam Binoy Luwang and AMSU Bishnupur District Committee's former president Shining Khangembam.
At the event, Bruce Pebam commented on the many issues facing Manipur, and said that the people of the State have suffered under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
He said as many as 1,528 cases of alleged extra judicial execution are pending before the Supreme Court.
On the current violent conflict since May 3, 2023, he said, the indigenous communities are facing a proxy war that has threatened Manipur's identity and integrity.
He condemned the Government of India's policies, and accused it of prolonging the current crisis.
In the absence of decisive actions to end violence and resolve the conflict, the indigenous people must unite and shape their own future, he said.
The Government of India must put an end to the "proxy war", he added.
