BISHNUPUR, May 28: The 37th Students' Emancipation Day was observed at Moirang Lamkhai Shanti Mandap today.
The Students' Emancipation Day remembers three student martyrs, Haobijam Ibohal, Urikhinbam Khelen and Kumam Sarat who were martyred in student movements in 1973 and 1979.
The observance at the Mandap was held after floral tributes were paid at the memorial of three student martyrs at the Moirang Multipurpose Higher Secondary School.
The observance at the Moirang Lamkhai Shanti Mandap was attended by AMSU president Lukram Malangba Meitei, AMSU Bishnupur District Committee president Wahengbam Hemchandra Meitei, Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup AMKIL president, Lourembam Nganbi, ANUL Bishnupur district president Lourembam Pramo and former AMSU, Bishnupur District Committee president Jiten Kumam.
Speaking at the observance, Lukram Malangba said AMSU is a student body that has continued to take key roles in every public movement since its inception to protect Manipur's identity and integrity.
From 1980, the student body has been demanding identification and deportation of illegal foreigners staying in Manipur.
While the sustained movement led to the signing of two accords with the Government in 1980 and 1994, these agreements have not been implemented effectively, he said.
Now, a war has been waged against the indigenous people of Manipur since May 3, 2023. This could have been avoided had the Government implemented the two agreements, he said. The Students' Emancipation Day is observed to commemorate students who were martyred in student movements in 1973 and 1979, he added.
AMKIL president Lourembam Nganbi Leima called on the indigenous communities to unite and face threats to them collectively.
