IMPHAL, May 28 : Manipur’s ace MMA fighter Chungreng Koren opened the fifth season of Road to UFC with a relentless finish of Ryuho Miyaguchi, finally halting things with a submission late in the second round of a bantamweight clash in Macau, China this afternoon.
After a neck and neck opening round, Miyaguchi looked to be finding his range in the early moments of the second, tagging Chungreng with several straight right hands.
But the State MMA fighter stood in and dropped Miyaguchi with a lunging left hand, kicking off an extended stretch where Chungreng looked to halt things with strikes before switching off to the submission and securing the tap. This was a gutsy effort from “The Indian Rhino,” who accepted this fight on short notice and made the most of it. Unfortunately, Choren missed weight on Wednesday, otherwise this would have been a perfect night for the emotional 28-year-old as he advanced to the semifinals.
Koren (Koireng) Youth Organisation (KYO), Manipur, extended its warm congratulations to Chungreng Koren over his historic achievement in Macau today.
In a press release, the KYO stated that Chungreng has scripted history for India, and particularly for Manipur, on the global stage.
Chungreng, widely known as "The Indian Rhino," is the very first fighter from Manipur to secure a victory and open an account in the Road to UFC Season 5 tournament, the organization noted.
Highlighting his journey, the KYO mentioned that he has been a regular, prominent face on India's homegrown MMA platform, Matrix Fight Night (MFN), for many seasons, where he captured the MFN Interim Bantamweight Championship at MFN 14.
The youth organization concluded by urging everyone to uphold Chungreng in their prayers and extend their full support as he fights to bring fame and pride to India by becoming a tournament champion in Macau.
