IMPHAL, May 30: A section of National Highway- 202 (Imphal-Ukhrul road) was dug out using heavy machinery during the intervening night of May 29 and 30 near Shangkai village, a Kuki dominated place.
With the highway dug out, movement of vehicles including those carrying essential commodities has been disrupted.
It is suspected that the highway was dug out by elements linked to the ongoing road blockade called by the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM).
Apparently, the highway was dug out to prevent movement of all types of vehicles along the route, sources said.
Notably, this disturbing incident of digging the highway occurred amid the tense situation prevailing in Litan area following the killing of an FCI truck driver from West Bengal near Litan police station.
The damage done to the highway reportedly came to light during a routine patrol conducted by security forces in the area.
News of the incident quickly spread to nearby villages, with residents questioning how such large-scale excavation could have taken place despite deployment of a large number of security forces along the highway.
Following the discovery, officials and security personnel visited the site to assess the situation and inspect the extent of the damage. There is no report of any arrest.
