IMPHAL, May 30 : Several organisations have condemned the killing of a truck driver from West Bengal and the injury of a police personnel in an ambush carried out by Kuki militants along the Imphal-Ukhrul road yesterday.
The attack occurred between Leingang Ching and TM Kasom, under the jurisdiction of Litan police station.
Nitish Kumar, the deceased driver was from Hooghly  district in West Bengal.
Is SoO a license to kill?
The Tangkhul Naga Contractor Long (TNCL) has questioned whether the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement signed between the Government and more than two dozen Kuki militant groups permits the killing of innocent people. TNCL stated that Nitish Kumar was the driver of its member, Ringold Ningshen. Condemning the ambush, TNCL said the attack by Kuki militants took place in broad daylight, right under the nose of Central security forces. The organisation also asked whether Kuki militants are immune to legal action and exempt from punishment under the law, allowing them to engage in criminal activities under the cover of the SoO agreement. TNCL urged the State Government to abrogate the SoO agreement and take necessary measures to protect the people.
Lapses exposed: AITUC
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) stated that the Government must take responsibility for the loss of life in yesterday’s ambush.
In its statement, the Trade Union questioned why drivers transporting essential commodities were targeted by Kuki militants.
Emphasising that drivers risk their lives to deliver supplies to the State, AITUC condemned the attack as an act of cowardice.
Pointing out that the site of the ambush has been the location of repeated attacks in the past, the Trade Union said yesterday’s incident occurred because the Government failed to implement adequate security measures. Noting that the convoy of goods vehicles was escorted by security personnel, AITUC asked how the militants were able to carry out the attack, which resulted in one death. The Trade Union claimed that the attack was launched from Yaolen Kuki Village,  urging the Government to apprehend the perpetrators and punish them. It also called for the establishment of a Highway Protection Force to ensure the safety of highways.
"Protect civilians"
In a joint statement, the All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLAMPAM), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur, and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) urged the Government and the authorities concerned to strengthen security measures to protect civilians. Condemning the attack on the convoy of   goods vehicles, the five organisations   also urged the Government to prevent similar incidents in the future. They shared the grief of the bereaved family and conveyed their wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured police personnel.
