IMPHAL, May 31 : A sit-in protest was held today at Kakwa Bazar, condemning the Government's failure to ensure the safety and security of civilians.
The sit in was organised by Nupi Khunnai Meira Paibi, Liwa Lambi Bokul Makhong under the aegis of All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (COHR) and Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF).
During the demonstration, the protesters urged the Government to work out a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis and put an end to the hostilities  being carried out by Kuki militant groups and their associates.
Questioning the Centre's handling of the situation, the protesters asked whether there is any reason not to believe that the Government of India (GoI) is allowing Manipur to remain in a constant state of unrest, as incidents of killings and enforced disappearances continue to happen in the State.
The protesters also alleged that Central security forces remained passive even when civilians are attacked in their presence.
Questioning the role of the Central forces deployed in the State, they asked whether the forces are here to allow one community to fight against another.
They demanded that the Government withdraw the Central forces if they are unwilling or unable to protect the people.
Alleging that Kuki militant groups are being used by the Government of India to undermine the integrity of Manipur, the protesters urged the Centre to stop its "proxy war" in the State.
They asserted that the people of Manipur would not allow the territorial integrity of the State to be compromised under any circumstances.
The protesters asserted that the people of Manipur would face every challenge confronting the State as one.
It has become clear that both the Central and State Governments are unable to safeguard the people of Manipur, the protesters said, adding that the people have been left to fend for themselves.
They urged the Government of India to end the proxy war and allow the people of Manipur to live in peace.
