IMPHAL, May 31: Only a decisive crackdown with an iron hand on terrorism will help maintain law and order and bring about normalcy, said senior Advocate and former Acting Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Khaidem Mani today.
Speaking to reporters at his residence at Loklaobung, Khaidem Mani said judging by the escalating tension in the State, the newly formed popular Government has 'failed' in its governance.
The violent clashes in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, Tronglaobi attack, hostage crisis and killing of driver in ambush--all these incidents occurred shortly after the formation of the new Government, Mani said.
All these incidents that have escalated tension are reflective of a failing Government, its inability to curb terrorist activities, he added.
The Manipur Government has the security forces it needs. There are Army and CAPF to assist the civil administration. In addition, the Chief Minister is the head of the Unified Command. However, such power and authorities vested upon the Chief Minister and his Government have not been utilised till today to crack down on all unlawful activities, Mani said.
If it has the will, it will not be very difficult for the Government to trace the hostages and secure their release, he added.
While calls for safe release of the hostages have been raised from different quarters, the Government is yet to clearly state what it has done and is doing to rescue them, Mani said.
In case the Government is not willing to answer, the Court of law may be approached to get an answer on the steps being taken up by the Government to secure the release of the hostages, Mani said.
Taking serious note of the situation on the highways, Mani said the Government should take strong action against those people who dug out the Imphal-Ukhrul road to restrict vehicular movement.
