IMPHAL, May 31: The Meitei Alliance has strongly condemned "the cowardly and reprehensible act of terrorism carried out by armed Kuki militants" against a security convoy escorting Food Corporation of India (FCI) trucks and LPG/IOCL fuel tankers along the Yaingangpokpi–Ukhrul route that killed a driver on May 29.
The attack near Roudei (TM Kasom) village was reportedly launched from the Patleijang hill area, where armed Kuki militants had allegedly taken tactical positions overlooking the route, said the Meitei Alliance, stating this "terrorist act deserves unequivocal condemnation from all sections of society."
Notably, the attack killed a driver named Nitish Kumar (57), a resident of Hooghly, West Bengal, and injured a police Constable.
"It was a grievous attempt to obstruct a security operation undertaking the vital task of ensuring the safe movement of essential commodities and fuel supplies to the region. The deliberate targeting of such a convoy demonstrates a complete disregard for human welfare and public safety," said the alliance.
It said the State Government and the Government of India must demonstrate their courage and moral responsibility necessary to acknowledge such cowardly acts for what they are—acts of terrorism.
The Government must conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, bring all those responsible to justice, and take all necessary measures to ensure the Constitutional protection and safety of civilians and the uninterrupted movement of essential goods, it said.
The continued use of violence, armed intimidation, and terrorist tactics by militant groups can never provide a solution to any grievance. Lasting peace can only be achieved through adherence to the rule of law, respect for human life, and the firm and impartial enforcement of Constitutional authority. "The Alliance therefore urges all stakeholders to unequivocally condemn such acts of terrorism and support all efforts aimed at restoring peace, security, and normalcy in Manipur," it said.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved family of the driver and wishing speedy recovery of the injured police personnel, the Meitei Alliance said it commends the courage, dedication, and professionalism displayed by the security forces and civilian drivers who continue to perform their duties under extremely challenging and dangerous circumstances.
