IMPHAL, May 31: The Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM) has invited all indigenous people of Manipur to a “Native People’s Convention” which will be held at Makhan village on June 2. Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, NPCM convenor Ashang Kasar said that all preparations have been completed for the first native people’s convention.
Saying that pressing issues and challenges being faced by the indigenous people will be deliberated at the convention, Ashang Kasar appealed to all political leaders, social activists, student leaders and all stakeholders to join the convention. He said that the excesses committed by security forces, violence unleashed in the shadow of SoO agreement, attempts to carry out census operations without updating the NRC and the growing challenges to the indigenous people will be deliberated at the convention.
NPCM co-convenor Ph Deban said that the committee was formed to tackle the growing challenges to the indigenous people of Manipur.
It is essential for all indigenous communities to come together, share thoughts and ideas on the myriad issues and challenges, he said. Saying that the committee will not be able to do anything without people’s support, Deban appealed to all the people to share valuable insights and suggestions, and support the committee. At present, indigenous communities have been facing a lot of challenges and violence has been going on without any let up, he said. Deban said that security forces, instead of protecting civilians, have been committing excesses against the people. On the other hand, Govt leaders have limited their role to just issuing statements of condemnation rather than taking up any effective measures, he said. It’s time for all the indigenous people to come together and deliberate on what should be done collectively, he added.
