IMPHAL, May 31: Close on the heels of the killing of an FCI truck driver in a deadly ambush carried out by Kuki militants on Imphal -Ukhrul highway near TM Kasom village in Ukhrul district and digging up of the same highway by suspected Kuki miscreants near Shangkai village, Kuki militants attacked Konsakhul villagers today and inflicted bullet injury to one.
The injured victim has been identified as Kachiaklungbou Chawang (24) of Konsakhul.
He was evacuated from the spot by a team of GR and other Central forces today.
After giving first aid at Leimakhong military hospital, Kachiaklungbou Chawang was handed over to local villagers at Kanto Sabal and brought to RIMS at around 3.30 pm.
Speaking to media persons at RIMS casualty, Konsakhul village chairman D Adam Liangmai stated that the incident took place at around 10.30 am today when three villagers of Konsakhul went to the river which flows near their village.
The three villagers went to the river to look after water pipes used for drawing water from the river to their village.
Notably, the village has not been getting water from the river after Kuki militants cut the water pipes.
As the three villagers were about to reach the river, Kuki militants assisted by some individuals from Leilon Vaiphei village who were already present in the area fired indiscriminately toward the innocent civilians.
When the villagers tried to run backward, they came under attack from the rear too. As such, it is apparent that the attack was pre-planned and Kuki militants knew in advance that Konsakhul villagers would come up to the river to look after their water problem, Adam Liangmai said.
In the attack, Kachiaklungbou Chawang (24) of Konsakhul sustained injuries on his right hand while his two companions identified as Poungamlakbou Malangmei (55) and Manonlungbou Abonmai went missing.
The injured person was evacuated by Central armed forces using bullet-proof vehicles but they were blocked by unruly Kuki mobs at various junctions, preventing the security personnel from taking the injured person for medical treatment.
At first, the injured person was taken inside the Leimakhong military hospital where he was given treatment.
At around 3 pm, the injured victim was brought out in a military ambulance up to Kanto Sabal. From there, Kachiaklungbou Chawang was taken to RIMS Hospital in another ambulance.
The two missing persons were later found safe hiding deep inside the river.
The two sustained minor injuries and they reached Konsakhul village at around 2.30 pm.
Strongly condemning the attack by Kuki militants, the village Chairman asked the Government to look into the matter and take effective measures before it gets worse and goes out of control. On the other hand, an unruly Kuki mob raised an uproar and protested near the Leimakhong military camp, sources said.
