IMPHAL, Jun 9: Asking whether the "scheme for economic empowerment through SHGs" is being used as a tool to win votes in the upcoming Assembly elections, the Manipur Youth League (MAYOL) has sought clarity over the scheme.
While the details of the scheme have not been made clear, women are being enrolled at several Assembly Constituencies for the scheme, MAYOL said in a statement.
If the scheme is to empower women as stated, the Government and its related department must make clear the provisions of the scheme and its intended purpose to the public, it said.
The scheme is not funded by any political party. It is a Government scheme and its funds are derived from taxpayers money, MAYOL said.
The "scheme for economic empowerment of women through SHGs" intended to empower 3.5 lakh women was included in the State Budget earmarking a fund of Rs 350 crore, as announced by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand on March 8, MAYOL said.
While 3.5 lakh women are to get Rs 10,000 each through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in their respective bank accounts in the first phase of the scheme, it is not yet clear who are eligible for the scheme, MAYOL said.
Are all women in Manipur eligible for the scheme ? Or, is it for Self Help Groups only ? Who are the beneficiaries ? And, when will the money be credited to the account of the beneficiaries ? The Government and related departments of the Government must make the scheme clear to the public, MAYOL said.
While making clear the intended purpose of the scheme, the Government must implement it fairly and transparently, and not let it be used as a tool to sway voters, MAYOL said.
