IMPHAL, Jun 9: The Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM) and the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) have vehemently condemned the brutal crackdown on women protesters by troops of Assam Rifles at New Haven, Ukhrul district on June 7, 2026.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, NPCM convenor Ashang Kasar said that the brutal crackdown on unarmed women by AR troops was a direct challenge to the very foundation of democracy and a brazen violation of human rights.
All along the people of Manipur have been protesting and denouncing the conduct of Assam Rifles and their brutal crackdown on unarmed women on Sunday as evoked serious questions on their neutrality, Ashang Kasar said.
Instead of assuring a sense of security, Assam Rifles troops have been creating a sense of fear and insecurity, he said.
The concerned authority must carry out a thorough investigation and prosecute all the AR troops involved in physically assaulting women protesters, he demanded.
The NPCM has also strongly condemned the killing of Chunjanglung Pan- mei, an innocent villager, by Kuki militants at Charoi-pandongba (Pong-ringjang) village on June 8.
It is suspected that a Kuki militant group under SoO agreement was involved in the killing of the innocent village, Ashang Kasar demanded immediate abrogation of SoO agreement.
He also demanded withdrawal of Assam Rifles from the surrounding areas of Charoipandongba village.
Meanwhile, COCOMI Women Wing convenor Wahengbam Luwangleima accused the Assam Rifles of openly taking the side of Kuki militants in the protracted crisis which erupted on May 3, 2023.
The people of Manipur have lost all faith in the Central forces and there has been a strong demand for withdrawal of the Central forces from the State, she said.
She said that the COCOMI Women Wing has taken strong exception to the brutal crackdown unleashed by Assam Rifles against women protesters at New Haven, Ukhrul district.
Luwangleima said that the protest erupted when a unit of Assam Rifles forcibly tried to open their camp at the village.
Taking serious note of the CRPF DG’s instruction to CRPF personnel to neutralise miscreants moving with armed in civilian areas, the COCOMI Women Wing convenor has asked whether armed Kukis will be kept out of the same instruction or the movement of armed Kukis will be overlooked.
