IMPHAL, Jun 9: The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has taken strong exception to the Government's decision to hold the election to the State's lone Rajya Sabha seat on June 18.
Notably, June 18 is observed as "The Great June Uprising, Unity Day" in commemoration of the mass movement launched in 2001 to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur.
In a statement issued by its secretary of information and public relations Soibam Anil, the Committee stated that June 18 holds immense significance for the people of Manipur.
It was on this day in 2001 that thousands of people took to the streets to protest against a Government policy that was perceived as detrimental to the territorial integrity of the State.
18 people were killed in the movement.
Stating that the Government could have fixed the election on any other date, the UCM questioned whether the decision to conduct the Rajya Sabha poll on June 18 was a deliberate attempt to dilute the significance of the historic event.
The Committee urged the Government to reschedule the election to any other date as a mark of respect for the historic people's movement.
It further asserted that the Government must refrain from taking any action that could undermine or diminish the significance of June 18 and the sacrifices made by the martyrs.
Claiming that the people's movement thwarted the Government's alleged scheme to disintegrate Manipur in 2001, the UCM questioned whether the Government deliberately scheduled the election on June 18 as an act of vengeance.
Had the Government upheld democratic principles, the election would have been scheduled on a different date, the Committee charged.
UCM stated that the people of Manipur will continue to face all attempts to disintegrate Manipur.
Meanwhile, the Committee announced that "The Great June Uprising, Unity Day" would be observed at Kekrupat on June 18 as in previous years, and appealed to people from all communities to participate in the event.
