Women’s SAFF champions Panthoi and Priyangka return to warm reception

IMPHAL, Jun 10 : India internationals Elangbam Panthoi and Naorem Priyangka who recently lifted the SAFF Women's Championship crown were accorded a warm reception upon their return at the Imphal International Airport by football enthusiasts, clubs and family members.
Goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi and midfielder Priyangka Naorem played key roles as India defeated Bangladesh 3-1 in the final match at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Madgaon, Goa on June 6 and sealed the title for the 6th time.
As many as 9 State players were part of the National team in the sub-continental event.
Speaking on the sidelines, Elangbam Panthoi said she was delighted to be a part of the National team. She however expressed concern over the receding presence of State players in the National team owing to engagement with other State teams and sports boards and lack of proper employment opportunities in Manipur.
She said that she has represented India in more than 70 matches since she began her journey with Eastern Sporting Union.
On being adjudged as the best goalkeeper of the competition, Panthoi expressed her gratitude to all coaches, family members and supporters for their constant guidance, support and encouragement.
While maintaining that she will continue to give best for the Nation, Panthoi also expressed her willingness to inspire and share her expertise with the younger generations in the future.
3-time SAFF champion Priyangka Naorem also expressed her happiness to script another achievement. She never had the opportunity to play full time in the previous edition, she said while adding that the recent edition was very inspirational as she could play full time.
She also found the target twice and assisted one against Maldives enroute to the final.
Recommending growing players to keep up the hard work and remain focussed even as they face injury woes, Priyangka also noted the importance of support and assistance to the players.
The duo were also accorded a warm felicitation at Keirak Keithel Lampak Community Hall.
Panthoi is the daughter of Elangbam Chinglenkhomba and Elangbam Ongbi Santi Leima of Keirak Makha Leikai.
Naorem Priyangka, meanwhile, is the daughter of Naorem Ibohal Meitei and Naorem Ongbi Tombi Devi of Keirak Keisham Leikai.
