6 hurt in mishap

Noney, Jun 10 : Six people, including an eight-year- old boy, were injured when an empty truck collided with an auto-rickshaw on National Highway-37 near the Catholic Church at Lukhambi Part-III, under Noney Police Station, around 12.20 pm today.
According to sources, the truck, bearing Manipur registration number and travelling in a convoy from Imphal to Jiribam, collided with an auto-rickshaw dri-ven by one Thaingamlung Kamei
The auto-rickshaw was en route to Noney Bazar.
The injured have been identified as Rahenliu Gon-mei (37), wife of Lum- toulung Gonmei; Hoinei- gong Gonmei (8), son of Lumtoulung Gonmei; Maja-khonliu (47), wife of Thainilung Kamei; Kalimgailiu Riamei (19), wife of Ramgaipou Gangmei; Thaingamlung Kamei (43), son of Namgongrei Kamei and and Gaimeichung Riamei (42), son of Meigui Riamei. They are all residents of Rangkhung-I Village and were travelling in the auto rickshaw.
The victims sustained injuries on their heads, arms, and legs and were immediately taken to Makaam Hospital, Longmai Bazar, for treatment.
Following the incident, leaders of Rangkhung Village and several civil society organisations (CSOs) in Longmai area expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents along NH-37. They urged truck drivers and convoy operators to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, particularly near blind curves, village settlements, marketplaces, and school zones.
The leaders highlighted that reckless driving, often combined with drunken driving, has claimed many lives on the Imphal–Jiribam highway, leaving several victims permanently disabled. They appealed to authorities, drivers’ unions, transport associations, and convoy commanders to implement stricter measures to ensure road safety. Meanwhile, a team of Noney police station has conducted a preliminary inquiry and registered a case for further investigation.
