Imphal airport to celebrate Yatri Suvidha Diwas 16 arrivals and 16 departures handled daily

IMPHAL, Jun 13: Imphal International Airport is celebrating Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15.
On the day, passengers arriving at the terminal will be welcomed with traditional Tika and warm hospitality, reflecting the rich culture of India. Cultural performances, including traditional drum dances and demonstrations of renowned Thang-Ta martial art, will be organized to showcase the State's unique heritage to travellers, said the airport.
Several passenger-centric activities and engagement programmes will be conducted, particularly for young travellers. Special assistance and support will also be provided to elderly passengers to ensure a comfortable travel experience, said the airport.
In addition, airport familiarization and tour will also be organised for students of UNACO, Meitram, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) equipment and function will also be demonstrated to the students, it added.
"Through these activities, we aim to celebrate the spirit of service, strengthen our engagement with passengers, and reaffirm our commitment to providing a safe, comfortable, and passenger-friendly airport experience," said the airport.
Imphal is now connected to all major metropolitan cities in India. Under the UDAN scheme, the airport is also well connected to various destinations across the North East region.
Imphal is the second airport in the North-East Region, after Guwahati, to be equipped with radar surveillance facilities.
Over the past twelve years, Imphal Airport has witnessed remarkable growth in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic.
In 2014, the airport handled only around four arrivals and four departures daily, with fewer than 500 arriving and departing passengers each day.
Today, the airport regularly handles more than 16 scheduled arrivals and 16 scheduled departures daily. Total aircraft movements often exceed 50 per day, including non-scheduled flights.
Passenger traffic has also increased significantly, with approximately 3,000 arriving and 3,000 departing passengers being handled daily.
The Security Hold Area (SHA) has been expanded to accommodate around 450 passengers, compared to its earlier capacity of 250 passengers. The number of check-in counters has also been increased to 18, said the airport.
To ease flying experience, the airport has introduced several passenger amenities, including--Kid Zone, Smoking Zone, Child Care Room, MIHY Facility, Free Wi-Fi, Facilities for Divyangjan and differently-abled passengers, AVSAR (Airport as Venue for Skilled Artisans of the Region) assistance services, Flybrary, Additional seating and workstations, multiple charging stations, improved greenery and artwork displays.
The airport said it is planning to launch UDAN Café shortly. Tea will be available at Rs 10 and coffee at Rs 20, along with various food items at affordable rates. The facility is awaiting final BCAS clearance and is expected to become operational soon, said the airport.
Meanwhile, the New Integrated Terminal Building, under construction on the eastern side of the existing terminal, spreads over approximately 22,000 square metres.
The NITB will feature: four aerobridges, separate domestic and international arrival and departure areas, architecture inspired by the rich culture and traditions of Manipur, GRIHA 5-Star Green Building standards, parking facilities for around 1,000 cars and 15 buses.
At present, the project has achieved approximately 50% physical progress. Every effort is being made to complete the project within the stipulated timeline, subject to smooth availability of logistics and transportation support, said the airport.
Detailing other major projects, the airport said the construction of a Cargo Terminal has been completed, and is expected to be opened shortly, significantly boosting trade and commerce in Manipur.
At present, only limited outbound cargo operations are available. Once fully operational, all airlines will be able to handle cargo from Imphal, leading to a substantial increase in cargo volumes, the airport said.
In addition, the construction of a dedicated helipad has been completed and is awaiting to be commissioned, said the airport.
