IMPHAL, Jun 15: A Cabinet meeting held this evening with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has approved a proposal to hold the 6th General Elections to Panchayats 2026. The election will be held on October 1, 2026.
The Cabinet meeting held in the Cabinet Hall, Manipur Secretariat, Mantripukhri further decided to issue a notification regarding renaming of Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) as Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-G RAM G), Manipur as MGNREGA will be known as VB-G RAM G all over India from July 1.
The meeting also deliberated on key matters relating to the administration and governance of the State.
Several important decisions were approved to enhance administrative efficiency and strengthen public service delivery, according to a social media post shared by the Chief Minister.
In a post on X, Yumnam Khemchand wrote, “Our Government remains committed to ensuring effective, transparent and people-centric governance for the welfare and development of Manipur.”
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and Art & Culture Minister Khuraijam Loken attended the Cabinet meeting physically while Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho attended the meeting virtually from Kangpokpi and Senapati respectively.
In line with the Cabinet decision, Commissioner (RD &PR) Sumant Singh has issued a notification giving details of the election schedule.
As per the schedule, the 6th Panchayat elections will be held on October 1, 2026.
A public notice for the elections will be issued on August 21 while the last date for filing nomination papers has been fixed on August 28.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on August 29 while September 1 is the last date for withdrawal of candidatures.
Re-poll, if required, will be done on October 5 and the votes will be counted on October 8, as per the schedule.
