IMPHAL, Jun 15 : A group of transporters has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Y Khem-chand, listing several de- mands to ensure free and safe movement along the Imphal–Jiribam road (NH-37).
The memorandum was submitted this evening by representatives of the Manipur Drivers’ Association, Highway Truck Ow- ners’ Welfare Organisation, and the National Highway Surveillance Union (NH-37).
A similar memorandum was also submitted to Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam.
Speaking to the media at Kwakeithel, National Highway Surveillance Union president G Chunthailung said they highlighted the difficulties faced due to the prevailing situation along the highway before both the Chief Minister and the Home Minister.
According to him, their demands include round-the-clock deployment of security forces along NH-37, establishment of permanent security camps at sensitive locations, and regular patrolling along the highway stretch.
Among others, he said they also demanded expediting road repair and maintenance works along the highway, setting up public toilet facilities and waiting sheds, installing drinking water facilities, deploying ambulance services and accident response teams, and inspecting landslide-prone areas.
He also called for the formation of a joint monitoring committee comprising transport bodies, Government officials, and security agencies to address issues along the highway.
