IMPHAL, Jun 15: Three suspected Kuki militants sustained bullet injuries in retaliatory firing by Naga village guards this morning near Konsakhul village, Kangpokpi district.
Sources said that heavily armed Kuki militants attacked Konsakhul village using sophisticated firearms and explosives.
As the Kuki militants tried to advance toward Konsakhul, Naga village guards retaliated and successfully stopped the Kuki militants from advancing to their village.
The exchange of firing lasted for a few hours and three Kuki militants sustained bullet injuries in the clash, said the sources.
On learning about the clash, a large number of security forces deployed in the nearby area rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. The security forces brought the three injured Kuki militants for medical treatment.
The situation in the area remains quite tense even though heavy security measures have been put in place in and around the area. Meanwhile, a report sent from Kangpokpi said that Munlui Leilon village came under fresh bombing attack on Monday morning, injuring three youths identified as Genlenmang Vaiphei (15), Paogoulal Chongloi (18), a footballer associated with Mohun Bagan, and Lunliandaw Vaiphei (20), an internally displaced person.
The three injured youths were rushed to Imphal for treatment, with civil society organisations later expressing concern over reports that a hostile crowd had gathered outside the hospital where they were admitted.
The latest attack came as Jangngam Hangshing's mortal remains who was killed in a gunfight at Langka village on June 13 were laid to rest Phaijang with full traditional honours. Meanwhile, the indefinite total shutdown and economic blockade imposed by Kuki civil society organisations continued across Kangpokpi district, paralysing normal life and reflecting the deepening anger within the community.
