Kuki militant slain in encounter

IMPHAL, Jun 17 : A suspected Kuki militant was slain in an encounter with security forces at North Songkong village under Henglep sub-division in Churachandpur district.
The slain man is suspected to be a cadre of UKNA identified as Lenminsang Haokip s/o Lenkhogin Haokip of Kolchung village, Churachandpur. Four others sustained injuries.
Sources said that the encounter took place when a combined team of 21 Para Commandos and 19 Assam Rifles launched an operation to bust a hideout of UKNA on June 16 afternoon.
The forces recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition, explosives other incriminating items from the site. The incident sparked local protests and demands for an inquiry.
Ongoing operations took place across suspected insurgent strongholds in Churachandpur and surrounding districts.
Authorities reported that the deceased militant was suspected to be part of the United Kuki National Army (UKNA), a non-Suspension of Operations (SoO) outfit.
Police have registered a case and launched a full investigation into the encounter.
On the other hand, BJP MLA Letzamang Haokip (Henglep AC) , while claiming that Lenminsang was a civilian, has strongly condemned the killing.
The MLA has demanded a thorough judicial and independent enquiry into the incident and stringent action against all those found responsible. The MLA also extended condolences to the bereaved family.
