Court remands one to police custody

IMPHAL, Jun 17 : The Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West, has remanded an individual arrested on charges of attacking a Traffic police personnel on duty at Paona Keithel with a knife yesterday to three days in police custody.
According to the Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) of the case, the accused, identified as Maibam Umakanta (27), son of M Shyam of Ukhongshang Nongpok Sekmai, has accepted the charges levelled against him.

The accused attacked Salam Tarunkumar (48) of Kwakeithel Mayaikoibi, a Traffic police personnel on duty at Paona Keithel near Mahabir Pharmacy, from behind with a folding knife around 10.45 am yesterday before fleeing the spot.
Tarunkumar sustained bleeding injuries on his head and hand. Police examined eyewitnesses, after which the accused was detained by City Police from a jewellery shop at  Wahengbam Leikai, and brought to the City Police Station for verification. During interrogation, the accused accepted the charges. He stated that he had a confrontation with an unknown person at a road crossing near Polo Ground after they accidentally bumped into each other. A traffic personnel intervened to prevent further escalation. The accused further stated that he later procured a folding knife, kept it inside his trouser pocket, and attacked the Traffic personnel from behind near Mahabir Pharmacy before fleeing to evade arrest. The accused frequently changed his statements during interrogation. After hearing the submissions, the Court remanded the accused to three days in police custody till June 19.
