Imphal, Jun 1 : Naga residents of the Koubru range blocked National Highway 102 at Kanglatongbi today to protest the abduction of six Naga men by Kuki groups.
The protesters demanded that the abducted Kuki individuals should not be released until the six Nagas held illegally are freed. During the demonstration, the protesters burned tyres and placed tree trunks and other heavy objects in the middle of the road, disrupting traffic.
Speaking to the media, Koubru Range Naga Women’s Union (KRNWU) co-convenor Wiriangjinliu Chawang said that 18 Naga residents of Konsakhul were initially detained by residents of Leilon Vaiphei Village on May 13, of whom 12 have since been released.
Stating that six abductees, however, remain untraced, she questioned whether there are “flesh-eating people” in Leilon Vaiphei.
She also questioned why no extensive search operation has been conducted at Leilon Vaiphei, from where the Naga civilians were abducted.
She claimed that Konsakhul was attacked again yesterday, even as the fate of the six Naga men remains unknown.
She claimed that the Government mounting pressure on the United Naga Council (UNC) for the release of Kuki hostages without ascertaining the fate of the Naga abductees is unacceptable.
She claimed that the water pipe supplying Konsakhul was cut by Kuki miscreants, and people who went to inspect the damage were fired upon by them, she claimed and asked why the Government is not taking any action.
She also questioned the alleged silence of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen on the issue, demanding that she resign on moral grounds.
She said that an indefinite shutdown will be imposed on the Imphal–Dimapur road if the Kuki hostages are released without freeing the six Nagas in illegal custody.
