IMPHAL, Jun 1: The road connecting Churachandpur and Kangpokpi via Tupul has been classified "no longer safe" for Thadou people, said the Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) advising the people of the community against travelling the route.
"After careful review and assessment, it has been concluded that the road connecting Churachandpur and Kangpokpi via Tupul in the foothills is no longer safe for Thadou people for various reasons. Therefore, all members of the Thadou community are hereby informed to cease using this route with immediate effect," it said in a public notice issued today.
Furthermore, a community understanding between the Thadou and the Meitei was reached under the aegis of Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) and various Manipur Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on August 6, 2025.
In light of this understanding, the movement of Thadou people from various districts of Manipur through Imphal has been facilitated by Thadou Inpi Manipur, it said.
"Accordingly, all Thadou people are once again advised to register through the portal available at thadou.com.
However, this arrangement does not apply to individuals who are members of Kuki organisations or who identify as Kuki, as we cannot assume responsibility for them," it said.
All genuine Thadou people should carry their Tribe Certificate (in which the tribe's name is correctly entered as "Thadou" without any prefix or suffix) at all times for identification and verification purposes, it added. The office of the Thadou Inpi Manipur can be contacted for any assistance or clarification, it said. TIM further reiterated that the "Thadou is a distinct ethnic group of people. Thadou is not Kuki, or underneath Kuki, or part of Kuki, but a separate, independent entity from Kuki. Any organisation, individuals or elected representative that incorporates "Thadou" but espouses Kuki and mis-portrays Thadou as Kuki or a part of Kuki is illegitimate and does not represent Thadou people and interest."
