IMPHAL, Jun 2: With the election to the State’s lone Rajya Sabha seat scheduled for June 18, many people have expressed keen desire to elect a new Rajya Sabha MP who is capable of taking the State’s issues to the Parliament and committed to bringing peace and stability in the State.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Saitu AC MLA Haokholet Kipgen said that it will do well for all the people if an individual capable of addressing the State’s conflict situation is elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Manipur needs a Rajya Sabha Member who is responsible, impartial and capable of articulating practical ideas towards resolution of the existing conflict situation, he said.
Social activist Ashinpou Gangmei said that it will be politically correct to elect a  capable individual belonging to the indigenous communities to the Rajya Sabha.
Even though the MLAs who would elect the Rajya Sabha Member belong to different political parties, the MLAs need to rise above the interests of their respective political parties and elect an indigene to the Parliament in view of the existing conflict situation, he asserted.
Ashinpou Gangmei said that a united force is required to tackle the existing conflict situation and the lone Rajya Sabha Member can contribute a lot in tackling the crisis and restore normalcy in the State.
Senior Advocate Khaidem Mani said that a Rajya Sabha Member carries a big responsibility for his/her State and the responsibility far greater for States like Manipur which has just a single seat in the Upper House of the Parliament.
It will do well for Manipur if the ruling parties  study in detail who should be elected to the Rajya Sabha in the backdrop of the prolonged conflict situation besetting Manipur since May 3, 2023.
The Rajya Sabha Member should have the acumen to raise the State’s key issues and the prevailing conflict situation in the Parliament, he said.
Khaidem Mani said that the Rajya Sabha Member should be educated, have legal knowledge and be bold enough to raise questions in the Parliament.
There is no rule which says that MPs of ruling parties cannot raise questions in the Parliament, he said.
